CHOKING HAZARD - No Small Parts

Brace yourselves: This is a self-indulgent dumping ground for my latest Star Trek fan art, so either nod & smile until you get to the end, or just click away now and wait until I post something more interesting (athough that could take a while...)

Diving straight in, here is the result from August's 'bonus photo' in my Cloud Mouth post: August's Art Challenge: "Hailing Frequencies Closed" (in honour of the dearly departed Nichelle Nichols at the end of July)

I had an idea for September's "TOS Anniversary" Art Challenge theme - the Ardanan floating city, Stratos.  That didn't pan out - the sketch on the right is as far as I got - so I ended up submitting a sculpture-type thing of the TOS operations & engineering insignia instead.  I cobbled it together from old, broken & seaworn roof tiles on a wander down to the beach to blow away the frustration that Stratos had built up.

Someone from the TrekBBS discovered that StarTrek.com had a fun Lower Decks 'Replicate Yourself' tool, so of course I had to have a go:

I always fancied myself as being in the sciences division (should I ever have found myself in Starfleet) as science blue suits me MUCH better than command red or operations gold, but I realised while choosing all the bits & bobs for this avatar that I'm really more suited to be in engineering/ops.  Ah, well...

The preliminary ideas and sketches for October's "Pre-Warp History" challenge theme can be found in my Knicknacs and Odds-n-Sods post, and here is the as-finished-as-it's-ever-going-to-be effort:

As almost nothing has been shown of Betazed's culture (in televised Star Trek), I didn't have a lot to choose from to make this recognisably Betazoid (I know, excuses, excuses...).  However, TNG: "Menage a Troi" did supply the muktok plant (right), the tall pink plant (left), and the architectural style of the 'castle'; TNG: "Genesis" supplied the frog (as Troi was 'devolving' into some sort of amphibian); and Lwaxana's comment in TNG: "Half a Life" was the entire basis for the bewigged aristocrat.  Oh, and the asymmetry of the dress's neckline is taken from Troi's turquoise dress
I didn't do a background because I was tired, which meant that I'd have almost certainly ruined it with the attempt.

Keeping with the LDS art style... It was Blogger Crush & Coven Member Tim's birthday on 10th November, so I turned him into a Lower Decks captain (he's a bigger Trek nerd than me!)

This was based on a photo of him from a couple of months back.
I did apologise to him for the boggly eye...

Having given up on my original My Little Pony idea for this month's Toy-based Art Challenge, I found inspiration from an idea I had earlier in the month, which was based on Kimolu's and Matt's insistence that Sam Rutherford (and his broad, sweaty shoulders) join them in the Cetacean Ops tank (from LDS: "First First Contact"):

[Screencaps from Cygnus-X1.net]

I started work on Rutherford splashing around with Kimolu, but soon got distracted with November's fan art challenge, "Toy Trek", so I didn't finish the picture below:

However, I couldn't get the foxy engineer out of my head, so I quickly dumped the My Little Pony idea I had (MLPs with Star Trek-based names and cutie marks), and made Rutherford himself the toy!

I imagine that Rutherford replicated (or made - he's pretty handy) himself
a life-size action figure box with which to tease those cheeky Belugas.

And here's my finished entry: Rutherford offering himself up as Kimolu's and Matt's plaything! (Because he felt guilty that he didn't have time to "splash around" with them in "First First Contact")

[Oh, gods, I wish I had this toy!]

For the uninitiated, "No Small Parts", "Moist Vessel", and "Room for Growth" are all episode titles from Star Trek: Lower Decks; a T88 is a diagnostic tool; Rutherford's broad shoulders & sweaty body being a draw for Kimolu & Matt were established in "First First Contact"; and Hans Federov is the 'Towel Guy'.

Other denizens of Cetacean Ops can be found here (Gallamite), here (Narwhal), and here (Humpback whale).

Well done - you've reached the end!  You can go and have a cup of tea now - or something stronger to take the edge off...

    3. Lazy sod! No doubt he'll be back for his end-of-year book round-up, and make empty promises to resume blogging again (for more than a couple of posts, anyway).

  3. I for one love your Star Trek Fan art! I especially love the Uhuru and your Rutherford "toy", clever! Funny that Lower decks has whale kink in it. but there seems to be a niche kink for everything these days.

Remind me, have you watch or read The Expanse? As far as I'm concerned, its the best Spaceship-related SciFi series since Star Trek. All of the characters are really well developed and interesting in their own way.
l identify mostly with Drummond. Fierce and loyal to those she chooses to call family.

    1. Thank you, Melanie!

I haven't read it, but I've seen the first couple of seasons of The Expanse and really liked it! I can't remember why I didn't continue watching it, though? I have vague recollections that it stopped being broadcast (as it on the SyFy channel?) and went to some streaming platform...
I can imagine you as Drummond. I don't think I'm like any of them - although I have been known to channel Avasarala's potty mouth at work sometimes!

    2. Avasarala really does have some great lines, doesn't she? We could moon over the frustrating but handsome Holden together. Amos is a perfect depiction of my stepbrother. Ha,ha,ha

    3. Oh, I love Amos! He's adorable! Although, I wouldn't want to catch him unawares, or get on his wrong side... Mooning over Holden would be much safer.

  4. I love the sand art with the broken tiles. If I was getting you a Christmas present I would give you an Andy Goldworthy book.

    1. What do you mean "if"?!? Surely you don't think I deserve a visit from Krampus? (Although, he and his 13 inch tongue is popping round later in the week for a quick 'catch up')

  5. Ken Rutherford ? He's inflatable, and becomes massive.
Sorry, I have no clue about this, but they have red for the commanding level, yellow for operations, and blue for engineers. What colour are librarians and historians ? Or are we multicoloured, like the jesters always used to be ?

    1. Ken Rutherford? The cricketer or political scientist? Actually, forget it - I don't think I'd like to frolic about in the pool with either.

Funny you should mention Rutherford becoming inflatable and massive, as that's exactly what happened to Lower Decks' Sam Rutherford in "The Spy Humongous"!

    2. P.S. You're mostly right about the department uniform colours: red for command, yellow for operations & engineering, blue is for science & medical. Librarians and teachers also wear blue, at least in the late 24th century which is when Lower Decks is set. Historians and anthropologists wore red back in the 23rd century - back then, red was for operations, and yellow/green was for command.

  6. I would play with Rutherford... choking or not. How lovely to have such a passion for something. And you're so talented. Very beautiful, hard to pick a fave. Can a coffee table book be far behind?

    1. Thank you, Mr Tonking! So kind. I'm sure Paramount/CBS Consumer Products are looking up my contact details as I type. After all, there must be a market for cartoon whales with a kink for beefy starship engineers, mustn't there?
