Seal of Approval

Hound was disappointed with the last post's lack of corpses.  Well hopefully this one will satisfy him.

And, no, before high horses are got on, I didn't go seal clubbing - this young lady (at least, I think its a lady?) was perfectly well and alive, warming herself in the sunshine.

She didn't seem that bothered about me.  I sat down about 3-4 metres away and we had a little chat, then I got up and continued my walk.  She was still there when I walked back, the lazy cow.

If you want to see death, just scroll down past the seal photos.

Overstrand beach is not known for seals (except the ones that give me a poke while I swim)

"I'm ready for my close ups, Mr DeVice"

"Did you get all that?"
Yes.  Show off!

Cuttlefish "bones" I found amongst the shoreline flotsam and jetsam.  These were quite large - as big as my hand.

Sun-dried starfish, anyone?

A dead catshark...

... or two.

There's plenty of stinky corpses for crows.  I'm surprised this one was able to fly!

  1. Oh now that's better. So I'll keep the shrunken head I stole from Pitt Rivers for you.
    That seal is a darling.

    1. You might aw well, Hound, as I have no where in the larder for such a thing: I went down to the beach again today and found another dead catshark and a few other fish, two dead sunstars (sans arms), more cuttlebones, a MASSIVE blue lobster claw arm (no claw), and a multitude of crab parts.

    1. Well, she's barking up the wrong tree.

      Unless, she's really a he...

  3. What a gorgeous and enchanting seal! Are you certain there aren't any Selkies in your neck of the woods?

Thanks for sharing the fantastic shots of the beautiful seal. I'm imagining RuPaul's Supermodel (You Better Work!) playing in the background as you take fotos and say to the seal:

You better work, cover girl, work it girl, give us a twirl
Do your thing on the runway
Work, supermodel, you better work it, girl of the world
Wet your lips and make it love to the camera

Work, turn to the left, work, now turn to the right
    Work, sachey chantey
Work, turn to the left, work, now turn to the right
    Work, sachey chantey!

I believe cuttlefish are in the delicious kalamari/octopi family. Yummy!

I wasn't aware there was such a creature as a catshark. I wonder if they got stranded in a dwindling tide pool or met their end in the waters before washing ashore to become scavenger chow. Same for the starfish.

    1. Anna Wintour has already been in touch about getting the seal on the cover of Vogue!

Funnily enough, the catshark is also known as the dogfish.

  4. I don't think I have ever seen MJ so docile before.

You certainly captured some good pictures of her, I'll admit.

    1. I think I caught her at a good moment - I noticed the Vodka fountain had been drained dry!

    1. I had to avert my eyes. It was only my twitchy finger that enabled the shot.

  7. That is one lucky seal that it was you and not a certain Canadian who found her!

    1. Over ten years ago (yikes!), the certain Canadian did feature in a tale from over the Cusp in which an unlucky seal featured. Only it was a different Canadian who performed the act.

    1. Perhaps the seal was enticed to the beach by your clapping?
