Happy

After the weekend's snowy disappointment, I thought I'd do a happy post to make up for it.  So, without further ado, these are some of my (current) favourite things:

Superstore:

I found this sitcom on Netflix on Sunday.  Or, rather, Netflix displayed it prominently on the home page and I got suckered in by it.  I watched the little preview (with the sound off - always with the sound off) and thought I saw Ugly Betty.  I kept watching and, yes, there was America Ferrera along with a very attractive Pretty Boy (Ben Feldman), so of course I was going to watch it.  Well, a few minutes of the first episode, anyway...

It was joyful!  I couldn't stop at the first episode, and now I'm halfway through season 2!  I hadn't realised how much I really needed something light-hearted and entertaining to lift me out of the lockdown doldrums.  I urge any of you who may be feeling a little (or a lot) glum to find something fun to watch or do  (I have also watched a couple of French & Saunders episodes, and 13 Going on 30 starring the delightful Jennifer Garner and adorably handsome Mark Ruffalo).

Swans:

These two swans are still mooching about in the field by the reservoir up the road (last seen at the end of December, here).  They're clearly in love - just look at them making 💗s with their necks.

Bulbs & rhizomes - the promise of summer:

I popped into the garden centre after my walk this afternoon to get some horse manure (and Jellyatrics), but was almost immediately distracted by a cunningly placed display of summer bulbs and rhizomes.  That Starfish Iris (Ferraria crispa) couldn't jump into my hands quick enough.  And it was shortly followed by the spider lily and bearded iris "Burgemeister".  I'm not sure where I'm going to plant them (they'll be resting in the garage until April) - probably a pot on the paysho?

In related news, I had a surprise on Tuesday when my hot* surly postman thrust a bulging package of seed through my flap!  I was quite overcome.  It turned out to be a most unexpected, but delightful selection of seeds from a certain Delargo Madam.  It looks like my summer is going to be filled with luxuriant growth!

* He's let himself go somewhat this year - I blame the pandemic - with some extra weight and questionable choices regarding winter wear.  Still, I have noticed a rather attractive binman...

  1. I LOVED the show Ugly Betty!!! Probably my all time favorite American tv show. Is there a pretty or more chic show? I have seen Superstore, never got faithful to it. During the show I can only think of ways to get Ben Feldman in my bed.

    1. Ugly Betty was a Must Watch and introduced so many cutting put-downs to my repertoir. Although, I seem to have forgotten most of them to the mists of time now...

Except: "You odious sea-cow, Betty", as uttered by Marc (of course)

  2. Thanks for the recommendation, I can use one. I started 7 different movies and TV series one night recently and couldn't stick it out more than a few minutes on any of them. One I didn't even make it through the credits.

    1. Well, I hope you manage to get through an episode or two of Superstore, or at least find something enjoyable to watch, Peenee?
I don't know how you feel about animation, but there are several Studio Ghibli (and similar) films on Netflix at the mo which I find are easy to get lost in. I watched "Only Yesterday" the other day - a non-fantastical, realistic drama and it was lovely (I wouldn't have watched it if it was live action, but the art & design is just beautiful).

  3. I know what you mean about needing something light hearted and entertaining to lift the spirits. We don't have Netflixs but have started watching Gavin & Stacey from the beginning of the first series ( We missed it the first time around ).
Love the photos of your Swans and look forward to seeing your new bulbs in bloom in the long waited Summer.
We are pleased that you like the seeds and you must keep us posted on how you get on with them.
    TTFN.

    1. You can guarantee that I'll be posting gardening updates - I can't wait for sowing time!

I never got into Gavin & Stacey. I've seen bits and pieces and thought it amusingly realistic and funny, with great characters, but I found Stacey and Smithy to be extremely unlikable (Smithy, especially so), and just couldn't bear to watch them.

  4. What a strange coincidence - I started watching Superstore last night! I watched it for a couple of hours. Like you, something extremely light and entertaining was needed and it fitted the bill.
Sorry to hear that the postman has lost the plot with his Winter-wear, etc, but YAY! Hot bin man, welcome!!

    1. I love Superstore! I'm on to the third season now and not tiring at all! I think Glenn is my favourite character - he's just so naive and nice, and trying to be better, and looking after the staff. And his voice (I love Dina's impression of him).

I'm hoping that the weather warms up soon so that I can see if I'm going to stick with my postman or move onto the binman.

    1. It's a little crinkly around the edges (and, apparently, may have an unusual scent), but it's quite spectacular!

    2. If you've got it, flaunt it. Jx

  6. I was thinking that wasn't in the US because there were no obese people, but when the gun was shot, of course it is.
Have you seen Bad Education? Not just because of Jack Whitehall.
Our postman is very surly so I always go out and say hello in a really jovial way to cheer him up. Sometimes I bump elbows. He's off sick with stress now.

    1. I keep seeing Bad Education on iPlayer and wondering whether to watch it (I do like Jack Whitehall) - maybe once I've ploughed through Superstore?

Your postman story ending the way it does made me guffaw! That poor man...

  7. Nature (such as your swans) lifts my spirits much more than TV but you can't go wrong with Madame Arcati and Jon's choice of "Gavin & Stacey."

    1. I love swans, and often find myself going out of my way to see them. Did you know that mute swans are one of the heaviest flying birds?

  8. Is Superstore an American remake of Trollied? I've just finished watching Ruth Jones' comedy drama Stella, thoroughly enjoyed it, I didn't think I would, it being Welsh. Love the Starfish Iris very primeval looking, I'm on the hunt for something outrageous for the front garden that would go nicely between a blue spruce and a pinus mungo.

    1. I must admit, I did think of Trollied when I started to watch Superstore.

As for your frontgarden, depending on the prevailing wind, how about a Rafflesia arnoldii or a corpse flower?

Tickle my fancy, why don't you?
