"Tear My Head Out From The Sound"

Last Saturday was National Album Day which was brought to my attention by Jon (of course).  Now, almost a week on, and following Jon's Top Ten, I bring you my own top ten albums.
This was a difficult and somewhat harrowing choice to make, whittling down square plastic cases containing delightful discs of divine ditties.  I flicked through my shelves of Air and Alcazar, The Divine Comedy and Dannii Minogue, Girls Aloud and Goldfrapp, Kylie and Kula Shaker, Robyn and Röyksopp, Shakespears Sister and Steps - following Jon's rules: No "Various Artists" compilations, no "Greatest Hits", no soundtracks, reminding myself that I was choosing my favourite albums, not necessarily my favourite artists.
Eventually, I settled on my final selection. But before I get to them, here are the "almosts": Moon Safari by Air, Meccano Mind by Syntax, Sun Structures by Temples, Buzz by Steps, I Say I Say I Say by Erasure, All Possible Futures by Miami Horror, Wanderlust by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Seventh Tree by Goldfrapp.
Now, counting down from ten to one (the order of which is subject to change depending on my whim), here are my top ten albums:

Light Years
#10 : Kylie's Light Years (2000)
Light Years made Jon's list too, as did the video for the absolutely fabulous "Your Disco Needs You", so I've chosen a different version:

Scissor Sisters
#9 : Scissor Sisters' Scissor Sisters (2004)
My favourite track from the Scissor Sisters debut album isn't their brilliant cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" as illustrated below, but "It Can't Come Quickly Enough" which was written by band members Jake Shears and Babydaddy.

The Inevitable End
#8 : Röyksopp's The Inevitable End (2014)
The fourth single - "I Had This Thing" - from Röyksopp's final studio album is my number one, closely followed by "Save Me" which features Susanne Sundfør.

Read My Lips
#7 : Sophie Ellis Bextor's Read My Lips
(UK reissue 2003)
I've chosen the single "Get Over You" to feature here, mainly because I really like the slightly creepy mannequins.  It's a fab track - on a par with "Murder On The Dancefloor" - but I prefer "Sparkle".

Ta-Dah
#6 : Scissor Sisters' Ta-Dah (2006)
Another non-single track is my favourite from Ta-Dah, "Might Tell You Tonight", so here's something to brighten the place up a bit:

Black Cherry
#5 : Goldfrapp's Black Cherry (2003)
My favourite track from this album is "Tiptoe", but as it wasn't released as a single, it doesn't have a video, so here's my second favourite, "Strict Machine":

Night Work
#4 : Scissor Sisters' Night Work (2010)
I used to do my ironing to this album (I don't anymore because I no longer do any ironing)!  The title track and "Invisible Light" (featuring Sir Ian McKellen!) tie for my favourite.

Silver Eye
#3 : Goldfrapp's Silver Eye (2017)
The sublime Silver Eye's third single video features an athletic young man running (and falling) through a desert without any clothes on!  What's not to like?

Chorus
#2 : Erasure's Chorus (1991)
Ah.  Here we go.  Erasure, at last!
The title track "Chorus" can be found below, but it's the final three tracks that take the biscuit for me: "Siren Song", "Perfect Stranger", and "Home".

Erasure
#1 : Erasure's Erasure (1995)
The most played, most sung along to album in my collection.  I fear that one day soon I'm going to wear it out!
My favourite track from this album is "Rescue Me", from which this post's title is from. Closely following in the favourite stakes are the final two tracks, "I Love You" and "A Long Goodbye" but, like a few of the albums featured here, they weren't released as singles so have no videos.  Instead, you're going to have to put up with the almost-as-good "Fingers & Thumbs" and "Rock Me Gently", below:

Thank you, Jon, for showing us yours and prompting me to show mine!

 Anyone else fancy a go?

  1. Wow - one might suspect from this list that you are rather a fan of Scissor Sisters, Goldfrapp and Erasure... Of course, all of your choices feature on heavy rotation in our own collection; I love them all. Bravo! Can't wait to hear who steps forward next to fill the proverbial jukebox... Jx

    1. Well, they're all right, I suppose...

Who am I kidding?! They're fabulous! I must admit, I did want a bit more variety, but after hours of perusing through my CDs, Scissor Sisters, Goldfrapp, and Erasure really do cut the mustard.

If we're lucky, it looks like Eros might show us his!

  2. Tonight We Fly by The Divine Comedy would be a nice song to play at a funeral as would Monument by Röyksopp and Robyn. The last CD I bought was 50 Words For Snow by Kate Bush it was absolutely dreadful I took it back to HMV and got a credit note, I did try for a refund but you know what they're like in there, I bought Kath and Kim DVDs with it. I'm waiting with bated breath to hear the new ABBA songs.

    1. Ooh, ABBA! I forgot that they've got some new songs recorded. The first ones out in December, isn't it?

Kath and Kim's on Netflix right now. I'm considering watching it as I only saw a few of them when they were on proper telly decades ago.

    1. Oh, Savvy, I bet your top ten would have far more people interested in it than mine!

    2. Tomorrow you'll see mine! ;)

  4. Love Kylie, Scissor Sisters, and Goldfrapp!

I may attempt this in some smaller, more manageable form.

    1. "Smaller, more manageable form"? That doesn't sound like you. The words of a blogger past - "HUGE, but not unwieldy or out of proportion" - spring to mind ;)

  5. Not only do I not know any of the albums, I don't even know any of the artists. Sorry.

  6. Oh dear, I can't do mine, it would be way too embarrassing. Also I would find deciding impossible, largely because you make me listen to Erasure again when you do these posts, which I don't normally.
I'm shocked by the absence of Mrs Mills, Liberace and Bert Kaempfert, though!

    1. So, other than Erasure, musically we could be "Strangers in the Night"?

  7. Electrical popular music, as I understand ?

    1. You understand correctly, Mago. To coin a phrase from Goldrapp's Strict Machine*: "Wonderful electric"!

    2. I doubt that I could name ten top albums, rats !

  8. They are all very recent.... and then I thought it odd that I consider 2003 as recent!! I remember the Scissor Sisters 2004 album coming out as I had a friend who loved it.
    What would I choose? Hmmm....

    1. I was thinking the same thing as I put this together. I kept thinking I was going to be shamed for not having some older classics, but then realised that half of them are 15 years old or older, and only three are from this decade.

I've just come from yours - A very nostalgic selection, thank you!

    2. I feel really stuck in the past now that I've done my list! I find that downloading puts me off listening to whole albums, which is sad. I used to love going to Our Price and buying records.... So, I'm going to have a listen to the Sophie Ellis-Bextor album... and also pick an album from Jon's and Savvy's top tens and do some album downloading tomorrow. I think that all the different formats made me give up buying music. I have records, cassettes, CDs, and iTunes. My collection is so messy.
