GPE #6 : Savvy "shares something gorgeous from the garden and cheers the fuck up!!"*

S A V V Y

These are some random shots of what's growing in the garden today.
[21st February - IDV]

[...] The poppies just started blooming, but we've had big clumps of green leaves waiting patiently for their arrival.

I don't the name of the succulents that are blooming near the curb, but perhaps one of y'all might know from the close-up. (I know I could look it up, but...)

[The Official Plant Spotter of Hexenhäusli Device and its Extended Witchdom, nay, All of Blogdom Itself, Jon, came to the rescue with: "That orange succulent is (I believe) Aloe striata, and very lovely it is too!" - IDV]

A few garden photos from the front garden. The last pic is the first rose to come inside!
[From March - IDV]

[I don't think that's a snake...? - IDV]

[Well, of course it is - IDV]

[How fitting that Savvy shows us California poppies in California - IDV]

[Those are the glossiest rose leaves I have ever seen! - IDV]

[I took the liberty of including a later rose of Savvy's (from April, on the right) to demonstrate that they didn't all look like the first one - IDV]

The last photo is a quick arrangement by our head gardener, the MITM.

 * Although she sent in photos** - and several days before the deadline, if you can believe it - Savvy's only comment in her email was "Several garden pics - you choose".  Well, I chose all of them naturally, but I also chose to raid her blog - just like I've done a couple of times before - for photo captions and the title to this post.  I found it here in May and couldn't resist!
 Thank you, Savvy!

P. S. Is your triffid, 'The Plant That Took Over The World', the same one as the triffid lurking behind the banana-leaf print drape here

** This was the last photo in Savvy's email:

Where's the rest of the wine?!?

  2. OMG!!!! SNAKE!!! SNAKE!!!!!!

Apologies, I will pull myself together. Aloe, Savvy [someone had to say it], thank you for sharing the Californian sunshine with us! I think you're more of a gardener than you like to make out.
    Sx

    1. It does look like a garden snake, sweetpea, but is, in fact, our garden hose! It's one of those fabric things that expand with water and shrink when not in use. The MITM leaves it coiled up in a small metal beverage tub in the front garden. xoxo

    2. Before I forget, all credit about the garden goes to the MITM! I just supervise and take pics! xoxo

  3. LOL That is, indeed, the "Plant that ate the World" peeking in behind the banana leaf shower curtain, sweetpea! You put my hodge podge of photos together so well, IDV! I am already (I know, right?) thinking about photos for next year!! xoxo

  4. THE SIGN! I love it! LOL, I need to find one just to watch the anal HOA Prez and Vice Prez look up a who/what the Wu-Tang Clan is. This very thought will have me chuckling for hours on this cold, damp night! Beautiful flowers! I love the aloe. I planted a couple of rose bushes this year and they are doing well, but not very photogenic yet, unless I had thought to do a close-up of a flower. Oh well, next year's GPE fodder I suppose.

    1. I know, right? The sign is available on amazon, search for wu-tang signs. I love it when folks stop and take pics of the sign! xoxo

  5. I recall her roses on her blog when she brought them in! I could almost smell them. I had a few poppies this year myself...lot of waiting till they bloomed only to have them last but a week or two. Savyy those roses are all but perfect blooms!

And Wu-Tang? Is that some kind of beverage or something?!?

    1. They really were gorgeous, thanks, sweetpea! The poppies died back and so the garden was weeded, but we're starting to see little clumps of green bushy leaves sprouting up, although I doubt we'll see flowers until spring. Re: Wu-Tang Clan, I'm guessing you're just kidding me! xoxo

  6. I was surprised to see aloes growing in Falmouth, massive ones, some people had etched their names and pictures of cocks on the leaves, they usually die after flowering, however, they make an excellent lube in an emergency.
I'm taken with the Salmon pink roses and talking about fishy things, the glass bowl full of sliced lemons, white wine and claw crackers on the "no veneer in here" dining table suggests lobster for dinner?

    1. Hey, Mitzi! There are over 650 species of aloe (I had to look), so to find them in the UK ( I also had to look to see which Falmouth you were referencing - love your "about" info) is not as surprising as I thought. I had to look at the pic agian and yes, we were indeed having a New England style lobster boil that afternoon with one of our grandkids who'd never experienced one! (I saw what you did there with the Salmon, fishy things! (Well done you!) xoxo

  7. What? No coasters on the table under the glasses? Shocked and appalled. Otherwise, a lovely display of garden glory.

    1. Tis only the kitchen table, Mistress, have no fear! Coasters are mandatory on all other wooden furniture, sweetpea! Thank you for your kind words. xoxo

  8. Great to see that roses grow in California. This may sound idiotic for you, especially when you actually know California. But I do not know that place, and in my imagination it is always a kind of desert, sandy & rocky. With snakes, as shown in picture 6 (To declare it a pipe is just a step to sooth the visitors : It surely is the Ringed Rattler or somesuch !).
But there is wine & roses, hallelujah !

  9. A gin in your lovely garden and then you already have the table set for dinner. I would be there in a shot
