Skyline

If you arrived here thinking this post is about the entertaining but ridiculous film about brain sucking aliens (or the car made by Nissan), you're going to be disappointed.  Sorry.

The Chapelfield Spire sits atop what is now known as Chantry Place shopping centre

No, this post just concerns (some of) the skyline of the city of Norwich where I work (and used to live).  I took these photos last June and remembered while constructing this post why I didn't post them back then: I got caught up in researching the various buildings and architecture - so much so, that what was supposed to be a quick, easy post turned out to be all consuming (which happened again this time around, but I managed to break free.  Just).
Also, this was going to be a Four Photos post, but I couldn't whittle down the photos I took to just four.

Coming to land (on Broom) this is the view north-west across Norwich.  Aside from all the churches (and one of two cathedrals), the highest tower on the right is the clock tower of City Hall.  The Chapelfield Spire is just out of frame on the left.

The view North from my landing spot featuring Norwich Castle (and crane) and the other, more famous cathedral to its right.

One of the pointy bits atop Sentinel House (I used to work just under it).

South-eastwest from Sentinel House is this black tower (not the Black Tower) that I think was an old windmill.  Trying to find out what this tower was is one of the reasons this post has taken so long to construct!  (I gave up)

The old National Westminster bank.  If you look carefully at the "view north" photo, this building can be seen right in the very centre (and the art school dome below is just a little to the left past the church).

And finally, the squared dome of the Norwich School of Art (sometimes frequented by cormorants)

And that's it. We've spent too long on this already.
(I promised Bitey I'd take him on the beach.)

  1. I do like having a nose around a new town! [Although we do have a friend who lives in Norwich, we've never been.]

Most people neglect to ever look up when they visit somewhere, which is their loss - but like you, I find a city's skyline fascinating... Jx

    1. I like all the domes and spires and towers and the like. Plus, it's good to know where all the taller buildings are when coming in for a landing at night!

[Perhaps I shouldn't have been so generous with the photos, as now you've seen what Norwich looks like (well, some of it, anyway), you might not feel the need to visit?]

  2. I wish I'd taken photographs of all the places in the City of London where I used to work. I wish I'd had a love affair with my camera back then as so much has been demolished - gone forever.
Anyhow, yes, surely that black tower used to be a windmill? There must be a way of finding out.....oh no.... I'm going to start searching now!!! Resistance is futile.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean. Finding someone else's photos isn't quite the same.

Although, helping someone else research their own photos is just as rewarding!

  3. Is the black tower 72 Eleanor Road?

    3. Yes! That's it! Peafield Mill!

I know now why I couldn't find it - I was looking in completely the wrong place. It's further south and to the west of where I thought it was. Thank you, Ms Scarlet!!

  4. The joy of disappearing down rabbit holes of research., Always make sure you have a ball of string to unravel to make sure you can find your way back.

    1. Sage advice, Madam A. At one point, I found myself on the wiki page for 'No Ordinary Family' (a show I used to watch which Eric Balfour - who starred in the film 'Skyline' - guest-starred in), and the sidereal compass rose!

  5. Of course I'd like the architecture of the National Westminster bank.

When I go somewhere, anywhere...I take just about everything in being a visual person...which is often why when I get back home from a day out or a hoilday, I'm mentally wiped out.

    1. That shot of the NatWest bank reminds me of Mary Poppins (the film, not the witch - although it does also remind me of Poppins herself afterwards).

I love all the photos you spoil us with when you get back from a trip - and I'm not surprised that such trips take it out of you, somewhat.
