"She doesn't want to see Fanny on camera"

Just popping in to drop off a few things before returning at the weekend to wrap up the year and stuff it in the Sideboard along with all the previous years.

First up from the 21st, I had a wander down to the promenade where the North Sea waved to me rather enthusiastically:

Needless to say, I didn't walk along the prom so no witches got wet during the making of this production.  And no Biteys got swept out to sea as I left him at home.

Read
Star Trek: Lower Decks: U.S.S. Cerritos Crew Handbook by Chris Farnell
I've been waiting desperately for this book since 19th October - it's original release date - but it was put back a couple of months to 19th December!  I never thought I'd get it before Christmas, but it turned up on the 21st!  It was definitely worth the wait.
There are so many little notes and almost throw-away explanations that make a few bits & pieces of LDS make more sense.  Things that I hadn't really have thought about, but once explained had me thinking "Oh, yeah!" (like why there are holodeck biofilters instead of the holodeck turning all that "waste" matter into energy or whatnot).
It also helps that Rutherford has a super sexy expression slapped across his face in the Engineering chapter that he's featured in!
And there is also a funny story (although it must have been terrifying at the time) about a first contact conducted by USS Midthunder which ended in many of the crew soiling themselves!

As I didn't see any rainbow clouds (unlike much of the rest of the country), these firey late afternoon clouds from the 23rd will have to do:

Heard
"Bloodline" by The Slow Show has been an earworm since I heard it again during a Colin From Accounts rewatch over the last few days (it features in S1 ep3: "Toyota Cressida").  I don't normally like this kind of angsty "oh, poor me" music (and I find the singer's voice particularly annoying as the song goes on), but the brass bits lured me in, especially when the trumpets/cornets/whatever kick in at 2:50 (and later, the horns).

That brass bit was going through my mind yesterday evening while I took Bitey out for his final Christmas poo, and I had the nagging feeling that I'd heard it before (or something very similar) in another song.  Once home, I spent ages trawling through my YouTube history (stopping on 28th December 2021 at the exhilarating "Run Boy Run" by Woodkid before realising that wasn't it), eventually finding the song in question back on 29th October 2021: "Everything Now" by Arcade Fire.  It can be heard when the song gets going from 45 seconds in and continues throughout pretty much the whole song.  (Is it called the hook?  I have extremely limited knowledge of song structure, so will defer to someone else - Mr Tonking, perhaps?)

Watched
Ghosts: A Christmas Gift (series five Christmas special, and the last ever episode)
I'm not crying, you are, so shut up!

(This trailer really doesn't do the episode justice)

* If you hadn't already guessed, the post title was lifted from this episode.

And finally, this morning's sunrise - or what little of it that can be seen, anyway:

Yes, those silly people on the prom did get wet.

Look at them cowering against the wall trying to avoid the waves
(I didn't manage to capture the big wave that drenched them, unfortunately)

We hope you're all having a wonderful Winterval, and we'll see you at the weekend for the end-of-year round-up!

  1. Wow! When the sea gets cross she really flings herself about!

(Apparently, on 26th, hundreds of unwanted gifts had been posted for sale on the various sale sites. Must have been a lot of unhappy Christmasses...)

    1. Yeah, the sea can be a bit mardy at times - she wasn't even at high tide in these shots!

I'm not surprised about the unwanted gifts - I heard a couple of people at work talking about how they just panic bought a lot of crap just so they had something to give to their (unfortunate) loved ones. Useless!

  2. Glad to hear that nobody got North Sea'd off the promenade because DANG that looks ferocious! We've got high seas here too, but luckily we're up on a bluff a half-mile away from the tumult. Now I'm going to listen to the music you posted - and envy you your access to Trek! Merry merry darling XOO

    1. My TV access to trek has diminished to barely anything as I don't have the right channels/subscriptions. Fortunately, the books and a few DVDs/Blu-Rays will keep me going.

My previous abode was not far from the top of the cliffs, and when the waves smashed against the prom, I could feel the house shaking.
I live on the other side of the village now.

  3. Oh, lovely photos. Thanks for sharing. Does my heart good. That first song made me long for Blue Nile for some reason. Currently enjoying Charlotte Cardin... Kizzes. Happy holidays... hope yours was fantastic. More to come.

    1. Oh, I love "Downtown Lights"! And Annie Lennox's cover, especially.

Thank you, Mr Tonking - and happy holidays to you, too!

  4. Fab Photos. I miss the sea and love it even when it's angry.
Sorry but I am not a fan of mumbling music with or with out brass. I think I will stick to 'Steps'
The Star Trek book sounds facinating
and I thought you might like to know that I got 'Fanny' this Christmas !
    Cradock that is.

    1. Yeah, he is rather a mumbler. Turn Steps up and drown him out!!

The Trek book exceeded my expectations, thankfully. I had such high hopes for it - based on my favourite Trek series as it is. I hope your Xmas Fanny lives up to your expectations!

  5. Was that suppose to be a new born baby in Ghosts? Didn't you fancy a festive dip?

    1. I must admit, I'm rather glad they didn't use an actual (or near) newborn as they're hideous. Give them a couple of months to plump up and I won't recoil in horror.

There's a Boxing Day dip every year, but you won't catch me doing it - It's cold enough in the summer & autumn!

  6. Actually I love Fanny on TV especially in the Royal Albert Hall with Johnny. The only sort of Fanny I like.

    1. Ah, "Bon Viveur"! Although I'm not convinced about a raw egg being the something sophisticated in french onion soup...

  7. Roald Dahl would be proud of the Woodkid video "Run Boy Run."

Of course, I love the sea even when she's angry. Sometimes *especially* because she's angry, crashing and thrashing in ways I cannot without causing serious concern to those closest to me.

Because of my research regarding water mills in the area around Norfolk the algorithms now give me news stories from your neck of the woods. There was one last week about houses at the precipice of crumbling into the ocean from erosion. We have the same issue here in some coastal areas. It's inevitable I suppose.

Tickle my fancy, why don't you?
