Enough Moping - Time For Gardening!

While I dried off, this stone spiral 'happened'

After a week of moping and mourning, this weekend's wet and blustery turn was rather a let down.  So, instead of dwelling on that and before we get to the gardening bit, here are some photos taken last weekend when I ventured down to the beach for a swim.

My sea swim spot

Now the gardening bit: As the year is ticking on, and November is only a month and a half away, let this serve as an unofficial reminder to continue your preparations for

the
I N F O M A N I A C
Garden Photos Event

I'll do a proper reminder early next month, but if you haven't done so already, start taking photos of your current horticultural hotties/good-looking greenery/pretty-as-a-picture plant-life, and remember to winkle out those old photos of your gardens/terraces/balconies/window boxes/pot plants of yesteryear (ideally something that hasn't featured in the GPE before), too.  Oh, and Terrifying Triffidery is still a thing, so get snapping your monstrous specimens (or otherwise ordinary undergrowth but from strange angles/close up/while drunk) for the GPE preview event at Hallowe'en.  Ideally, I'd like all your photos by midnight on Saturday 29th October, but knowing what some of you are like - Savvy! - I'll take what I can get when I can get it.  And that includes you and your marigolds, Mr Tonking!

While I'm still not exactly sure what I'm going to display at this year's event, I've already started preparations for next year's GPE:

I took some Fuchsia cuttings in August and they're all coming along nicely.  You can see classic varieties such as "Next to the Swing" and "Opposite the Garage Door"

A close up of "Blacky" already putting forth flower buds
(I ought to nip them off really, so all the strength goes into growing)

Oh.  Now you start sprouting!  After two years of nothing.  Nothing!
My Starfish Iris (Ferraria crispa, first seen here back in January 2021) finally deigns to spring to life.  In the Autumn!  Now I've got to try and keep it alive through the winter.  Bah!

Moss is finally growing in the channels between the paving slabs that make up the hideous circular paysho.  It may not look so stark next year, now.

: : :

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've just heard from the coastguard that Ms Scarlet is parading about on the beach in her marabou-trimmed nightie, so I've got to go and retrieve her before the tide comes in...

["Glitter Ball", by Altered Images, of course]

P.S. It seems something's wrong with Blogger/my Sideboard, as I had the devil of a time to publish this, and I can't visit everyone's blogs.  Hopefully whatever it is will have sorted itself out by morning, because I can't face dealing with it now, so I'm off to bed instead.

  2. Well thank heavens the moss in growing in your crack finally. You must have been losing sleep over it! I must get my pictures in order to send to you. I just took my triffid picture today as a matter of fact...between this, Melanies photo project and trying to get my elf shorts organized...it's been a time.....

a gin or a cock might be in order.....

    1. Oh, I'd forgotten about the FGES! How did that happen?!?

:: wonders if this year's triffid will top last year's big, purple, veiny monster ::

  3. Ps. I have noticed the blog side bars too. I don't know what's going on either. But have noticed in sidebars, that blogs that haven't updated are at the top of sidebars and blogs that post daily or several times a day are at the bottom. I sometimes read blogs from my sidebar, but missed a ton of new updates today, because it appeared they didn't post today, when in facts they did post. But in the reader, it was correct. Blogger is really driving me bonkers.

    1. All those which have gone to the bottom have lost their latest blog post & image, and have 'feeds/post/default' after the address. I can't get into the Layout section to check if they're like that there, and if so remove the errant additions. It is most vexing!

    2. I feel as thought the blogroll as not worked correctly in months. When I click on those blogs, Jon's is one of them, all I get is HTML CODE!!!! A friend of mine told me to delete the blog roll and enter them on the link gadets instead. I ran a test for two of them and it worked. Otherwise blogs on my blog roll are no updating or a get that html code all over the page. I don't need this shit after 15 years!

      Just hold me Mr DeVice.

    3. Maddie, dear, before you pull your eyelashes off and throw them at me - does this happen on both my blogs? Only I see that the link to my Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle blog a) still has "http" rather than "https" in its URL (Blogger doesn't handle "http" links very well), and b) has a weird extra bit after the actual blog address: "/feeds/posts/default" that doesn't need to be there. Jx

    4. Huh? LOL!!!! No... it's just Give Them the Old Razzle Dazzle! Other blogs I click on from my blog roll do the same thing. You click, and get a whole white page of nothing but codes of some kind, the whole page too. Other blogs I can access, are taking minutes to load. I need another gin........

    5. I have checked the Blogger Help/Community thingy, and it seems that all Blogger blogs are affected - Quelle surprise...
While Maddie's friend's solution to add blogs to sidebars/boards via link gadgets seems to work, the Layout part of Blogger Dashboard is inaccessible, so there's no way amend/delete the existing lists.

      Group hug, everyone!

P.S. Jon, have you deleted your Blog Archive lists in your sideboards, or are they victims of this Blogger nincompoopery as well?

    6. I just accessed the layout editor and restored those missing Archive widgets - and, no, I did not delete them. It's not only the widgets that re completely fucked, however. The Reading List isn't working for my Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle blog at all - neither of my most recent posts have shown up! I despair of the Google gnomes and all their meddling. Jx

PS Maddie - when I hover over the title of my blog in your "Blog Roll" sidebar, it shows as I described above, with "http" and with the pointless extra bit "/feeds/posts/default" at the end. If you edit those two things out, fingers crossed it'll be OK. As for the rest of the glitches, gawd only knows if and when they're going to fix them. I have complained in the "Feedback" form on the dashboard twice, and am about to do so again. Nagging sometimes helps... Jx

    7. PS - Mr DeVice: I notice exactly the same on your "Blogorati" widget. My links, and those of Norma, Tim, Hound and others have exactly the same problem as on Maddie's "Blog Roll", for some reason. Jx

    8. You managed to access your Layout Editor, Jon? Bravo! I've been getting error code bX-ckqzo9 since Saturday (as have many others according to Blogger's 'Help' pages) and can't get in to change anything :(

    9. I just wish the Reading List wasn't broken. Jx

    10. I'm right there with you Mr.DeVice. I haven't been able to access the Layout editor either since Saturday.

  4. I really like these views out over the Sea, thank you IDV. I hope there are no nasty tentacled jellyfish or something, but I guess the Northern Sea is simply too cold for this kind of aquamarine life. It's obviously not too cold for MsScarlet ...

On the technical side - it took pretty long to reach your blog, no idea why. In the end, the Russians.

    1. Ah, Mago! I thought it might be you. I was just about to log off and go for a walk when you commented, but I didn't hang around to see if another would pop up revealing just who 'Anonymous' really was.

The most poisonous thing to be found in the sea around here is probably me!

  5. You Fuchsia labelling made me chuckle! It's a mantra for me - "never lose a label; you'll never remember what the hell it is in a year's time..."

    1. I need to take up that mantra, clearly. I keep finding labels scattered around the garden, but none of them are for Fuchsias, rather annoyingly.
I have managed to identify one or two (whether correctly is another matter....) since writing those labels: "Pink Fuchsia by paysho door" is probably 'Display', and one not pictured here (attached to the wall gate) is likely 'Blands New Stripe'.

  6. I am fine, Mr Devine, I am just looking for pink shells and I wore the marabou as a colour reference. Bit chilly though.
Meanwhile, my issue with Blogger is that Blogger Blogs are taking an age to load on screen - even the keyboard is sluggish. The Blogger Gods are up to no good.

    1. Yes, Blogger's evil gnomes are obviously "making improvements" again, which means everything is all over the place... Jx

PS You look lovely in a coral marabou peignoir, Ms Scarlet.

    2. Just how many glitter balls did you lose in the sea while looking for shells, Ms Scarlet? Your retinue of moistened bints/watery tarts are still engaged with the recovery operation.

Yes, the evil Blogger gnomes/gods have fucked everything up again. Getting into Blogger Dashboard doesn't take any time at all, but accessing the actual blog takes an eternity! And I still can't access the 'Layout' bit to check/change the addresses of those blogs now relegated to bottom of the pile. Bah!

  7. I'm here a day later and was fortunate to miss a long load in time. I do see that Blogger has put an earthquake to your sideboard and made a mess of things. How rude! I can't imagine you'd eject Jon off the sideboard. I think Blogger is just trying to create drama. What pricks.

    1. I am narrowing my eyes at Blogger as we speak, or type, even.

Well, they've been narrowed since Saturday, but fat lot of good that's done. I might have to actually resort to logging some sort of error - as if I was at bloody work!!!

Ahem. Sorry. You were saying something about creating drama...?

  8. So sorry to hear that you have been having a rather difficult time of it xxx.
Your 'Derek Jarman-esque' photos are rather lovely and seedlings are always a joy.

  9. I am having trouble getting to visit blogs. It took forever to load this page. Not sure what's up with that. I have photos. Do I have to caption them? They are from spring, summer and fall and they are a mess. Turns out I don't like weeding! LOL. Oh, well. Do tell what we have to do to participate. I don't have much patience, but will try to comply :)

    1. I think the dratted Blog problems are over with. For now, anyway...

As for the Garden Photos Event, I'll do a proper reminder next month but - just for you, Mr Tonking - if you could provide a caption for each one (as brief or verbiose as you like) and email them to me (e-addr in my profile: ixxcat at gmail.com) by 29th October, I would be very grateful!

P.S. I rather like weeds - as many of the photos of my garden & allotment can attest. I'm sure some of yours will be right up my street, or shady border!

  10. I had a wee whinge over at Jon's a few minutes ago. I may not get a blog post out today (have to take my car for service), but will try to get a pic of the latest orchid for you...

    1. In this case, to find/uncover those photos that may be difficult to access (if they're languishing, forgotten, at the bottom of a drawer, or trapped in an old photo album). I think the saying may have originated from extracting periwinkles from their shells using a pin?

    2. And not to get one's winkle out...

    3. So it's okay to submit photos from gardens of yore? This year's garden wasn't up to standards.
