Cloudy With a Chance of Snowballs

Like much of the UK (except Devon, it seems), Hexenhäusli Device and its environs has become encumbered with a blanket of snow - the most we've had since the end of Feb/beginning of March 2018.  Unlike three years ago, I didn't have to struggle to get to work (not that I struggled very hard, it has to be said) thanks to working from home for some reason...

Anyway, here are some photos (which are very similar to those 2018 ones):

The leading photo and the one above are from yesterday's lunchtime excursion

And the following ones are from lunchtime today

The next photos are of the frozen grounds of Hexenhäusli Device - the first one from yesterday and the next two from today

Beaky tracks on the lawn

oOo

In other news, my Batflower (Tacca integrifolia) rhizomes turned up* a week or two ago!

I'm wondering if I should have ordered more than two in case they also came in the shape of letters.  Maybe I could have made a word?  Although, what's the betting the next rhizome letter would have been z...

  1. Your snow is a tad more dramatic than ours in London, I must say! What is more annoying than the "white stuff" is the damned frost - everything here is completely frozen solid, and, it seems likely to remain sub-zero until at least Sunday. Pretty deadly for our garden, as it is entirely in pots... Hey ho. Loads of garden-centre shopping for replacements to look forward to post-lockdown, I reckon. Jx

    1. Temperature-wise I think we've been more fortunate than most, as right on the coast here, it hasn't really dipped below freezing (maybe -1 or -2 at night). I'm hoping that the snow will stick around until Sunday (keeping all the plants insulated) and then melt all of a sudden when the temperature rises to the heady heights of 5 or 6 degrees!

I hope you don't have to replace too many plants - although, you have got all that holiday money spare...

    2. As soon as lockdown eases, that money will most definitely be spent on something more hedonistic!

It was -5C here overnight, and it's forecast for similar in the wee small hours of Friday-Saturday, then warming up (in time for me to go back to work, natch!) by Sunday night. Only once the pots have thawed next week will we be able to gauge what survived the horror and what didn't. Sigh. Jx

  2. Ha! In anticipation of hoping to visit my own nearby coastline soon I have also posted a memory and beach photos. Do you get to walk or bike to your beaches? If so, color me super jealous! It's my retirement dream to sit by a window and watch ships and storms all day.

    1. Yep, it's just a five minute walk down to the beach from here - it was only a minute back in 2018 (when those linked photos were taken) but I moved to the other side of the village in 2019 to ensure I didn't wake up on the beach amidst the ruins of my home!

I have just found your blog/community site! As there was no link on your Blogger profile, I thought you were just an observer, but then I realised that Wordpress is a thing and followed a comment link from Mago's, and there you were. I shall have a gander as soon as I finish up here.

    2. Mago and another blogger named Austereseeker were my first two blogging friends. We were all on blogger in 2007 and then in 2008, I think, we joined a revolt because Blogger was trying to censor another blogger so we left for Wordpress. I stopped blogging for many years and only commented on Magos blog, now as of last Nov I am trying to restart blogging again. It's hard having to learn/relearn the technical aspects. I decided to go with a focused topic on my blog for the sake of my sanity. My brain is like a six lane freeway. I feel like Data on TNG in an episode where he was having a "cascade failure." What is a crash of my brain freeway when I have too many competing thoughts, I go nearly catatonic trying to pull the wreckage apart. People will ask, "Are you okay?" And I feel like the word "Processing..." should be flashing on my eyes. Am I okay? I don't know, let me check. Brain? Body? Spirit? Are we all okay? Ha,ha,ha.

  3. Everything is freeze dried here, but no snow. Even my washing machine is frozen, so no clean knickers until the thaw. Just thought I would share.
    Lovely pics, as usual.

    1. I think the cold has made them shrink, Maddie - I haven't seen a cock in days! Although, I know they're around as I can see their tracks in all this white stuff.

Only four inches? You must be terribly disappointed...

  5. Never mind the rhizomes. I think Beaky is trying to spell something out for you with his tracks.

  6. Sorry to learn that you haven't been snowballed by lunchtime, sucks, really.
Like Maddie, I have not seen snowy beaches, or snow near the sea, ever. I find this very peculiar.

    1. I've never seen snow on the sand - too salty, I would imagine - but it is strange to see the cliffs covered with snow, certainly.

  7. Could have done with some cool snow the other day...I spent an hour chatting with friends on their verandah, then went shopping and got home dripping sweat! And then the tunder cleared things somewhat.
You bat rhizomes remind me that I must divide my big one.First, I need to find a pot big enough

    1. Perhaps we could do a quick weather swap? I'll take your heat for a day (that should get rid of this ice and snow) and you can have the cold (currently -1 but it might get up to +1 by late morning as the sun is out). Just bring your bat flower in first - I wouldn't want it to turn to mush!
