Snowbirds

Two inches of snow might as well be two feet.  As far as Château DeVice is concerned, this is enough not to risk going to work.  The fact that the main roads may be relatively clear is neither here nor there - I'm not walking up the road to check them just in case they are clear.  Although, Château DeVice has been invaded by sisters, nieces and nephew, so I've escaped upstairs to construct this post, and I'm actively considering going to work to get away from it all once this has been posted!
  Anyway, here are the snowbirds:

Here's Beaky lurking amongst the plant pots

Mrs Beaky keeping an eye on procedings

A robin waiting for the Beakys to get out of the way

And above it all, the blue tits hang off the feeders, smug in the knowledge that Beaky and the robin are relying on the scraps that they drop (although, I did throw some sultanas out for Beaky and his wife in a moment of weakness)

View from the kitchen window.  Yes, that's Car hibernating under a layer of snow

  1. Beaky appears to have put on some winter weight. Look at that belly.

What are all those posters on the fence by the road?

    1. He insists he's just puffing up his plumage because of the cold, but we all know its suet and sultana weight!

I don't really know about the posters - I don't pay them much heed. Although, I expect at least one is for the village panto - Peter Pan - this weekend. There's probably one for bowls and one for a gossipy coffee morning, too. I'll have a look see next time I cross the road.

  2. You have a lot of fat birds hanging around your garden, Mr Devine, but I'm happy to see them well fed in this weather.
Any snow on the beach pics planned?? Our yellow snow warning has been upgraded to amber for tomorrow... not looking forward to it. I'm hoping to get some pretty pictures, but the blizzard might prevent me. Stay warm!

    1. If I "can't" get to work tomorrow, Ms Scarlet, I might just venture down onto the beach. I almost went down today, but it was so bloody cold that I couldn't bring myself to. There was no snow down there anyway (yellow, or otherwise, LẌ...)
I hope you have all you need indoors to ride out the storm tomorrow. We should be out of the minus temperatures by the end of the weekend!

  3. With all that snow, no wonder there are blue tits! [rimshot]

  4. Gorgeous!
I'd like to know what the yellow flowers are in that view from the kitchen, please.
Must see, I'm rather envious as I read through blogs from t'other side.Well, thirty-something degrees and buggy mugginess wears thin!

    1. I think they're some sort of broom? I shall have to do some investigating...

I suppose a few days of the weather we're experiencing right now might be a welcome change? I don't know how The Very Mistress puts up with a lot worse than this for months at a time?!?

    2. Cytisus racemosus maybe? Some sort of broom, anyway. Not Broom.

    3. The flower is definitely some kind of broom (not broom), but the leaf is definitely not. Two plants together, methinks. Have you let your bush get unruly, Mr DeVice? Jx

    4. You are correct, Jon (about the two plants together bit, anyway...). In the Car photo, the noticeable sticking-up leaves belong to a bottlebrush plant, while the broom leaves are much smaller and covered in snow. Your reputation as The Official Plant-Spotter of Château DeVice and its Extensive Witchdom is assured!

  5. We have a profusion of (rather sad-looking at the moment) birdies in and around our new garden [...and what will remain of that after several days of -5C temperatures is yet to be seen], including blackbirds, tits, robins and wrens. I took the advice of the RSPB and filled a tray full of water for them yesterday (they need water more than food, apparently, when everything is frozen) but it turned to ice even in the daytime. I expect to find small-bird-corpses littering our environs before the week is out. Jx

    1. Oh, no! I hope they all manage to pull through (unlike those that Eros saw, below) now that you're ensuring they have water. I had to put out fresh water twice yesterday, and I've just done it again this morning. No doubt I'll be doing so again soon.

  6. Such stunning fotos of exquisite birds! Just lovely and fantastic!

How very nice of you to feed them in this terrible weather! The saddest sight after the hurricane was me seeing a bunch of birds dead against the side of a building. They didn't find shelter to protect them.

Your birds seem to be in much better shape, thanks to your efforts. So plump and radiant!

    Stay safe and warm!

    1. What a horrid sight to greet you. Very sad.
Luckily, we don't go in much for hurricanes around here (although we are currently experiencing 50 mph winds...), so the birds seem to be OK. And as both you and The Very Mistress point out: plump, too! Just don't go getting ideas about eating them.

  7. 6" of snow fell here and the whole damn city shut down! Of course, people can't drive in the rain here, so driving in the snow was MASSIVELY out of the question! The bords around your house are lovely! Everything around here was in hiding! xoxo

    1. That's the trouble with places like ours that don't see much in the way of ice and snow - we're very ill-equipped for it, and almost utterly inexperienced to deal with it.
We haven't had any snow since yesterday, but because it's been so cold, it hasn't melted and the winds have blown it all into snowdrifts that are blocking a lot of major roads & railways in our exposed countryside & farmland. No work today!

  8. Yesterday I saw two particularly stupid seagulls.
Who is taking the role of Peter Pan in the panto? I am at liberty, I should say.

    1. These seagulls - were they featured on daytime TV like a lot of other stupid creatures?

As for the starring role, I presume its already been filled as the production is showing now. There's always next year, though...
