M I S T R E S S M A D D I E
Here we are again at the Casa du Borghese and I still don't know what things are called and still just plant things even if I'm not sure of their requirements. Needless to say, I think it was a banner season in the garden as it gave color from spring right through the summer and even still has some color currently.
I think the cassia or the popcorn plant, and the wildflower garden were my favorite this year, and the flamingo plant was a new favorite that brought a smile.
And what's not to like about pansies and coneflower?
The roses smelled heavenly this year.
All in all I was quite pleased with my talent or lack of. Unfortunately, the moon platters went more sideways this year, instead of the upright perk they usually have.
Warning: Moon platters ahead*

Thank you, Mistress Maddie! That was certainly a bright and colourful foray into your flora and foliage.
It looks like a couple of last year's photos (salvias and datura "Ballerina") got mixed up in the batch you sent this year, so I took the liberty of replacing them with some from your blog, namely that gorgeous foxglove, and the lovely pink geum above it on the right (I couldn't find exact replacements, I'm sorry).
* Just trying out some spoiler code to see if it flummoxes the prudish Blogger gnomes who slapped the entirety of last year's moon-containing finale behind an adult content warning! The puritanical pests.

Such a wonderful variety of blooms! Oh, how we wish we had actual garden beds to play with, rather than just everything in pots...
ReplyDeleteBut I digress. We may have to try growing that Cassia, just for the hell of it, and now we have more light after the felling of a couple of the neighbouring massive trees, Nasturtiums again! Love 'em. Jx
PS I clicked that link thingy, and, oh my heavens - it's the Beaver Moon!!
Gin blossom, if you two had garden beds I can't even imagine what it would look like. I would probably think I'm at Longwood Gardens. I've always been truly amazed at what you two do in a pot of garden though, it's quite impressive. And as I was saying down below, our garden is just about all barren looking as the first frost hit. Probably next week and the weekend will entail some Gordon clean up and cutting of things way back and winterizing them. The season of decay is upon us, at least here anyhow.
DeleteI second the Mistress's comment. For no garden, but all pots, your garden is quite amazing my dear with its selection and color.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous array, Maddie! I fear it will be years before we have anything close to your colorful garden! Well done, sweetpea! xoxo And well done to you, too, IDV! I truly look forward to all of the garden photo contest! *snickering*
ReplyDeleteWell we would look forward to your results. This is about the third year of reworking the garden and adding things in. So the things from the first year are starting to mature very nicely.
DeleteIt's hard to pick just one thing to like. I always enjoy, the Mistress Maddie's garden posts. Besides the sideways moon platters, I should be so lucky to have one two half that nice, I was quite fond of the coneflower and the cassia.
ReplyDeleteOh, to have the space again for a garden...
If I recall magpie, you're in Amsterdam proper. You should try a potted flower garden which I have done off both sides of the patio and of course wait until you see Jons and the Madam's Garden. They Have a fabulous garden and everything to my knowledge I think is in pots. It's quite an amazing feat. And their selection is lovely.
DeleteOh, I love the wild garden! The whole effect of the garden is so pretty - please come and garden for me, and, ahem, bring the moon platters.

P.S The code is impressive, Mr Devine.
I'd be more than happy to help, but then she get a lot of rain there? I'd have to keep my moon platters covered up in a bathing suit at the very least. I was very satisfied this year with the garden. My goal was to try putting more color in with something to look at almost all summer. But next year I'm happy to report the Wildflower Garden is going to be even bigger. I just had a huge bush which was next to the wildflowers taken out. I call it a burning bush, because in the Fall it would get very Garnet red. But alas it gotten too big and couldn't really be cut back without being just a bunch of sticks. So next year my Wildflower Garden will be huge.
DeleteThat will be exciting to see Mistress. A shame the Buring bush had to go...but the only time they look pretty is in the autumn, otherwise they are sort of boring, and once they get too big they are just too hard to prune back. Good choice Mistress.
Delete" I just plant things" must be the understatement of the year. All is so likeable, but I am drawn to the Roses - enviable !
ReplyDelete😂😂😂😂 we all got a good laugh out of that comment. The group I'm with says you have no idea how true that is! Meanwhile the Roses and salvia are about the only two things left blooming currently.
DeleteBeautiful! I'm not one for yellow flowers, but I feel strangely drawn to the Cassia and I wouldn't mind a cutting from the moon platter, before it goes to seed.
ReplyDeleteIf you're able to try the calcium Mitzi go for it. I'm telling you when you rub up against it it smells just like buttered popcorn. Roll around in that naked and your bed Partners will be amazed.
DeleteHard to know where to start... but I think I'll just give 10/10 for colour and interest. (About the names: if you can, just keep the tags and don't worry about learning Latin!)
ReplyDeleteThank you Dinah! Actually I actually do know what's planted in the garden but not without looking at the flower tags I keep in a jar in the potting shed. I always save them especially for the annuals so I can remember what I got from year to year.
DeleteGreetings from the Poconos! Good thinking about the Foxglove Mr.Device. I have so many pictures in my photo library as a record of what I planted I have no idea how many photos I have. You should be glad I was in the right file. Heaven knows what you may have gotten then in the way of pictures! The garden is currently dying off quick now with a first frost at night last week....I suspect this week much will be cut back and down. The season of Death is coming.
ReplyDeleteThe Mistress rarely disappoints when it comes to color, I'll say that. Next summer I'm going to have to give the cassia a try and see how it does in a sandy soil. The cassia, the roses, always a favorite of mine, and the hellabore, the purple flower in the set of first three are among my favorites. I never had luck with foxglove, but I love them.
ReplyDeleteIf there is one thing Maddie is good at, that is making things grow.
ReplyDeletePopping in from Maddie's Place. Love these posts. What a glorious garden Mistress Maddie. Full of color and variety. I need to hire some of the gardeners here, as I have no luck with anything. My favorite? The pansies and the columbine. What can I say I like delicate and colorful.
ReplyDeleteWell, except maybe those triffids.
A cavalcade of colour!
