Wake Up! Morning Has Broken

This morning's sunrise as seen from the top of the promenade in Overstrand:

Overstrand Beach yesterday.  Anyone would think it's summer!

This wasn't a random baby left on the beach - I was babysitting for Inexcuseable

The next post will more than likely consist of stars and constellations, as there have been a lot of clear evenings and early mornings here, so I've amassed rather a lot of night sky photographs.  Be warned...

  1. There's a feel of "Rosemary's Baby" to that pram photo.

    1. Oh, gods. You noticed it too? I shall have to have a word with Inexcuseable...

  2. Good god. Across the pond here the scene is much different. Some day were on the same page it is scary. I posted my evening scene no long ago. I much prefer yours more.

    1. Your snow is beautiful, Maddie! However, I'm glad I don't have to live with it. I loved snow as a child, but out here in the wilderness, any snow fall (no matter how minor) causes chaos to our transportation links, so getting anywhere is a bit of a nightmare.

  3. I know you bought a new camera recently [a year ago or more...? Time is so fluid that I can't really remember], can you remind me of the model? It helps you to take some fabulous shots.

    1. I think it was nearly two years ago now? I don't know - I got thirsty trying to remember and drank the fluid...

Anyway, Camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60. It was relatively cheap when I bought it because it had just been superceded by a newer model. I find it very easy to use, mostly because I have it set to "Intelligent Auto" most of the time so I can just point and click. It's got a good zoom (well, good enough for my usage) 30x optical, and 60x digital (which I don't use), and some features and settings that I'm only just discovering/learning about (the "Starry Night" setting, for example, with which one can have a 15 or 30 second exposure; and a "Star Filter" which I used for the 'Rosemary's Baby' shot). I've only got a couple of gripes: sometimes it fannies around too long trying to focus (usually on extreme close-ups, or a subject surrounded by other focal points, like a bird in a tree - all those damn twigs & leaves!), and bright sunlight can sometimes wash photos out (there's probably some way to prevent this, but I can't be arsed to find out how).
It fits in my pocket, so it's no bother to carry around, plus it came with a free tripod, carry-case, and memory card (from John Lewis)!
I hope this is of some help if you're looking for a new camera? I expect you can probably get the newer model for a reasonable price now (I hope Panasonic has fixed the focus-fannying, too!)?

    2. Thank you, Mr Devine! I had an early Panosonic Lumix, but it got lost. I'd like another one... and your pictures make me want a new camera even more. I mostly take pics with my iPhone... and they aren't bad.... BUT... I want a real camera.

    3. At the risk of sounding like I'm a hundred million years old, I read a Which? article which extolled the virtues of the iPhone camera (I can't remember which version, though). They said it was as good, if not better than a lot of proper compact cameras.
However, at least with a proper camera you get more functions and only look mildly touristy, instead of some berk not looking where they're going while taking photos with their phone...

    4. I think I read the same article, but I am a hundred million years old, anyhow, this was one of the reasons I got the iPhone.... it's okay... but not like the LUMIX was! The pictures often seem to dark. I know I can fiddle around and edit them. I think it's the iPhone X that has the really pucker camera (I can use the word pucker due to my tremendous age, and perhaps misspell it as I see fit), sadly there is no way I can afford the iPhone X!

    5. I haven't heard anyone use the word "pucker" (no matter how its spelt or misspelt) in years. I think it was from the mouth of Jamie Oliver that I last heard it (once it had got around his potato-tongue, that is).

  4. YIKES! Was the baby swept out to sea?

    1. Luckily not. But even if he had been, I'm sure he would have been fine. He has so much blubber that the cold wouldn't bother him (plus, he'd float), and the sea creatures would just push hiim back onto the beach as they wouldn't want the sea sullied with the Devil's Spawn!

  5. Wonderful shots! The sunny beach does look like summer. I am captivated by the glimmering reflective light, especially the one with the baby stroller. I hope the baby put on some sunscreen before getting his tan.

    1. You can thank Camera's "star filter" for the JJ Abrams'esque lens flares. I couldn't even line up the pram and the reflected light properly!

  6. I love the way the babby's stolen the comments. I would like to offer a theory that he has been washed up out of the sea. Does he have webbed feet?

    1. Come to think of it, if you were out for sunrise had you been pushing the pushchair all night? Where did you come from? It's suddenly become a bit Royston Vasey.

    2. "Does he have webbed feet?" Please. He's a Norfolk Dumpling, of course he has webbed feet!

You can tell this isn't Royston Vasey because there are pushchair tyre marks in the sand (3rd from last photo). And they're not there because I couldn't find some hapless sucker to "help" me carry the pram down the cliff and across the beach...

  7. The depth of the beach is insane! It seems so level when the tide is out and desolate which to me makes that pram photo even more intense. One day we will truly have to visit and see this place in person! xoxo

    1. A proper low tide will have the sea way beyond the groynes, rather than tickling the end of the groynes as its doing in these pictures. It comes in quickly, mind!

Tickle my fancy, why don't you?
