Tunes on Thursday: You didn't notice my new leather catsuit, did you?

I'll warn you now, this is a bit of a big one.  I started this post last week, but forgot to enable the auto-publish for Tuesday just gone.  And of course, since then, I've listened to more music, both new and old, so the list has grown.

From old to new (but not in strict chronological order):

Shakespear's Sister - You Made Me Come To This
Best served in the car turned up to 11 so that anyone who can hear you screeching along to it just thinks you're Siobhan!

Donna Summer - State of Independence

Jon and Vangelis - State of Independence
I included this because I've only recently discovered that this is the original version.  I prefer Donna Summer's though.

Toto - Africa
Heard at the swimming pool this morning while I was gayzing at My Lifeguard 😍.

Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero

Dubstar - I Can See You Outside

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Stay On Me

White Lies - Keep Up
My favourite glum, beardy, miseryguts is back!

Haute & Freddy - Anti-Superstar

Haute & Freddy - Shy Girl

And to play out - because I watched the film again last Thursday night -
Monsters Theme by Jon Hopkins:

  1. Donna versus Jon & Vangelis? No contest. Love Tina. Hate Toto and Africa.

I had to listen to the Shakespear's Sister one as it wasn't familiar, and like it a lot. Ditto for Dubstar - I never knew they did anything else after Not So Manic Now, let alone be still releasing music in the 2020s! Love Sophie, but that one's a bit "meh". You can keep trying, but I remain unconvinced by Mr White Lies.

Aren't Haute & Freddy simply marvellous?! Shades of John Lydon/Public Image Ltd here, Cyndi Lauper there, a bit of The Cure, a bit of Trevor Horn - yet they make the whole thing into something all their own. I was thrilled when I stumbled across them in my meanderings across the interwebs... Jx

    1. I must admit, I'd lost track of Dubstar after their 2000 album Make It Better, so it was a nice surprise to find "I can see you outside". I really like "Token", too, and I think you will as well as it sounds a bit Pet Shop Boys.
Sophie's could do with a little more oomph, but it's still rather lovely. And I thought you liked "Tokyo" by White Lies? Or maybe it was just the video?

I shall be forever grateful to you for introducing me to Haute & Freddy!

  2. Oh, I was listening to The State of Independence the other day! On my Apple play list, so it must be a favourite. I was trying to drown out the scaffolders and their music.

    1. I'm guessing it was Donna Summer's more well known version you were blasting your eardrums with, Ms Scarlet? And did she succeed?

  3. I had to wait untill I had time to do this post justice. My thoughts =

Shakespears Sister - Released in 1989 but I have never knowingly heard this but I like it a lot.
Donna Summer - State of Independence. - I have Always Always Loved loved this
Vangelis - Love it but not as much as I love Donna.
Toto - Africa - Magic FM played in an early morning taxi to the Airport!
Tina Turner. - It's Tina Turner nuff said. everything she did was fab.
Dubstar - I like this. She has a young Marianne Faithfull look and Sophie Ellis-Bextor sound.
Dame Sophie of Ellis-Bextor - She is Pure Class. What's not to love.
White Lies - Not for me, Thank you.
Haute & Freddy - Wow fab is that. It's very eclectic but none the worse for that
Haute & Freddy - Shy Girl - Ok I am now a fan of Haute & Freddy .
Monsters Theme - I am sure they will love this on Classic FM and will play it constantly.

    Thanks for sharing

    1. I think "You Made Me Come To This" would have been a high-charting single had it been released, but we'll never know now. It really is a fab song, in my opinion - I love singing along to it in the car (and having it loud enough to properly hear the last couple of lines: "How are your friends doing these days? Are they still stupid?")

Thank you for listening, Madam A, and for your thoughts.
