Last month, we found this in the red greenhouse
It's an elephant hawkmoth
And last week The Mother discovered this on the lawn. Well Bitey discovered it and The Mother went over to see what he was staring at. An elephant hawkmoth caterpillar (she thought it was a poo!)
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh!* It's going to devour us all!!!!
*It may or may not be a pirate.
Goodness gracious, that things HYOOOGE!
ReplyDeleteThey are such an unusual colour. Think Pink!
ReplyDeleteThe Madam saw the "Flying Elephant"'s even bigger sister the other evening - the Privet Hawk Moth! It's been a very good year for these furry monsters... Jx
I knew that was an elephant hawkmoth...I too just discovered them. And are you sure that isn't Mothra in larvae stage?????? As you well aware she was just at my door a few weeks back. Thanks heavens she can be nice and kind too.
ReplyDeleteI found what looked like a poo in my driveway yesterday but it turned out to be just a poo. I would have preferred to find an elephant hawkmoth caterpillar.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are big critters. As a general rule (talking about Australia) they are not considered garden pests as their food source is leaves of privet, oleander sometimes lilac and ash. NZ does not have privet moths, but one of our native moths does eat privet. google Aenetus virescens
ReplyDeleteIs this a rare find??? I've never seen one before and thus feel cheated by life.

Wow! Wow, I say! Look at all of this nature fun you have been having without me! A bat!?!?! Butterflies, A Hawkmoth ( I love hawkmoths!) and also lots of pretty blooms! Well, I've got a quick post about my absence but one of the biggest problems was a computer crash! I will try to use the Garden Party as motivation to get my previous hard drive accessible enough to get all of my lovely pictures and stuff off of it sooner than later. I'd already started a folder for potential GPE submissions for this year. *sob
